Somali President: “The solution to the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo must depend on negotiation and peace.”
The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, participated in an extraordinary high-level summit of the East African States (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) held in Dar es Salaam, where the focus was on finding a solution to the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In his speech during the summit, the Somali President stressed the importance of the meeting as a decisive step towards stability in the region. He also stressed Somalia's commitment, as a member of the United Nations Security Council, to strengthening the African role in addressing continental conflicts.
He noted that the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo represents a “human tragedy” that requires an urgent response to ensure peace. He added: “Joint diplomacy between the two organizations, EAC and SADC, represents an important key to easing tensions, and the solution must be through dialogue and negotiation instead of military escalation.”
The President affirmed that his country stands by the peaceful efforts led by both the EAC and SADC, and that Somalia is ready to contribute its expertise in reconciliation and reconstruction to help resolve the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
