The President of Somalia offers congratulations to the Foreign Minister of Djibouti after winning the presidency of the African Union Commission

 The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, extended congratulations to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, after winning the presidency of the African Union Commission. The President noted that Somalia looks forward to working closely with the new Chairperson of the African Union to advance the common goals of peace, security and development across the continent.

Sheikh Mahmoud expressed his gratitude to outgoing President Moussa Faki Mahamat for his sincere leadership and service to Africa, stressing his country’s firm support for the African Union in order to achieve a united and prosperous Africa.

Today, Saturday, Mahmoud Ali Youssef, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Djibouti, won the presidency of the African Union Commission by obtaining 33 votes, defeating Kenyan candidate Raila Odinga in the final round after intense competition for the position. The new Chair of the African Union Commission awaits pressing continental issues, including the challenges of peace, economic integration and African Union reforms.
