The Somali Federal Government succeeded in facilitating the return of 145 Somali citizens who were stranded in Libya, where they faced extreme difficulties. The return process was carried out through the Voluntary Humanitarian Return Programme, funded by the European Union and coordinated by the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

According to government officials, the returnees were flown to Somalia on Monday, where 108 of them arrived at Adam Adi International Airport in Mogadishu, and 37 others landed at Hargeisa International Airport. Upon their arrival, they were received by government representatives, as well as officials from the European Union, the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The returnees are among many Somalis who have taken perilous migration routes in search of better opportunities, but have faced difficult conditions, including detention and exploitation.

The Somali government has expressed its commitment to assisting citizens in need abroad and ensuring their safe return. She said: "The Somali government, in cooperation with international partners, remains committed to supporting citizens facing difficult circumstances abroad. These repatriation efforts are part of our broader strategy to provide assistance and support the reintegration of returnees."

The Voluntary Return Program provides migrants in difficult circumstances with a safe path to return home, and support upon their return. The Somali authorities urged citizens to avoid dangerous migration routes and seek safer alternatives through legal channels.

This latest operation follows previous similar efforts, as Somalia continues to engage in international cooperation to address migration challenges and protect its citizens globally.
