Huawei Leads China's Smartphone Market for the First Time in 4 Years

Technology company Huawei topped China's smartphone market during the second quarter of the year for the first time in more than four years, surpassing Apple and local rivals like Xiaomi, according to IDC.

An IDC report stated that Huawei shipped 12.5 million phones in China during the quarter, representing an 18.1 percent market share.

Huawei's recovery in China comes after the company faced a series of export restrictions imposed by the United States, bans in Western countries, and a corruption investigation in Belgium.

After six quarters of growth, the Chinese market contracted 4 percent year-on-year, with total devices shipped to 69 million.

"Despite the recent trade truce between the United States and China, the global economic outlook remains challenging, with consumer confidence remaining weak," said IDC senior analyst Arthur Gu. He added, "This situation indicates that a significant increase in smartphone demand is unlikely in the near term, and the market will have to adapt to a more complex environment in the second half of the year."

According to official figures, the Chinese economy grew by 5.2 percent in the second quarter, despite the trade war launched by US President Donald Trump.

Huawei has become the focus of a fierce conflict between the world's two largest economies after Washington suggested that Beijing could use its equipment for espionage, a charge the company denies.

Since 2019, sanctions have limited the company's access to US-made technology, forcing it to develop its own components.

Apple is suffering from declining iPhone sales in China, and last year lost its position as the country's top-selling smartphone brand to local competitors. According to the IDC report, Apple ranked fifth on the list, maintaining a 13.9 percent share of the Chinese smartphone market.
