Somalia assumed its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council today for the first time since the council's establishment in 2003, a historic step reflecting the growing confidence the country enjoys regionally. Somalia won the seat in February 2026 and will hold it for two years, reflecting its increasing role in supporting security and stability in the Horn of Africa.In an official ceremony, the Somali Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Abdullahi Warfa, raised the Somali flag at the Council's headquarters, marking the commencement of Somalia's new role and strengthening its presence within African institutions.
Government officials described the move as a historic event that will enhance Somalia's international standing, particularly in the areas of peacekeeping, stability promotion, and cooperation with other African nations.
