East African Community (EAC) Secretary General Peter Matuki said Somalia has taken decisive steps towards becoming the eighth member of the EAC.
He indicated in a press conference in Arusha, Tanzania, that Mogadishu had reached the stage of negotiations, and expressed his confidence in Somalia's admission to the bloc this year.
Matuki added that the East African Group carried out a verification mission to assess Somalia's willingness to join the group, and stated that negotiations on recognition would begin on August 22.
Somalia applied to join the bloc in 2012, and the East African Community launched a verification mission on January 25, 2023 to assess Somalia's readiness to join it.
