President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud held talks with his Burundian counterpart, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and enhancing cooperation between the two countries and the two peoples on the basis of trust and mutual interests.

Sheikh Mahmoud praised the Burundian President for the role his country played in restoring the security and stability of Somalia through the participation of Burundian forces in the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia, “ATMIS,” and the two leaders praised the Somali army and the Burundian forces who are fighting Al-Shabaab fighters.

For his part, Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye thanked President Hassan Sheikh for his working visit to his country and for his efforts in establishing peace, democracy and development in the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The prominent result of this visit was the decision to hold a future session of the Joint Permanent Committee for Cooperation between the two countries, and the confirmation by the presidents of the two countries of their commitment to the goals of the East African Community and the African Union, especially in the field of economic growth and intra-African trade.
