Puntland boycotts the constitutional amendments approved by the Somali Federal Parliament

The Puntland regional government in northeastern Somalia announced its boycott of the constitutional amendments unanimously approved by the federal parliament on Saturday. The state indicated in a statement issued in response to the step taken by Parliament that it had withdrawn confidence from the constitutional institutions in Somalia.

The statement added that Puntland will act as an independent administration until an agreed-upon constitution is reached and a referendum is held, with Puntland being a part of that, and accused President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud of abolishing the constitution on which he was elected.

Puntland, along with former Somali officials, opposes the constitutional amendments approved by the federal parliament, which included the people's election of the next president, and other controversial issues between the government and its opponents.
