Somalia celebrates the independence day of the northern regions
The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Deputy Prime Minister Salih Ahmed Jama, members of the government and parliament and other officials attended a ceremony held on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the Independence Day of the country's northern regions.In his speech on the occasion, the President sent his congratulations to the Somali people in the country and abroad, wishing each of them a “Happy Independence Day,” and urging the people to adhere to unity, noting that the federal government is committed to protecting the country’s sovereignty and unity.
Sheikh Mahmoud indicated that his government does not oppose the implementation of development projects in Somaliland, but he reiterated his strong rejection of the memorandum of understanding concluded between the Somaliland administration and the Ethiopian government, saying that it affects the unity of the country.
The northern regions of Somalia, which were a British colony, gained their independence on June 26, 1960, and united with the southern regions that were liberated from Italian colonialism on July 1, 1960, but those regions declared secession unilaterally after the fall of the military government in Somalia at the beginning of 1991, although not Obtains recognition from the international community.
