 The former Speaker of the Somali Parliament, Professor Mohamed Osman Jawari, died in the capital, Mogadishu, on Friday, June 28, 2024, at the age of 79 years. The President of the Republic, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, expressed his deep sadness over the death of Professor Jawari, and said in a statement: “I extend my deepest condolences to the family, relatives and the Somali nation on the loss of the former Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari. He devoted many years to serving our country and left behind a commendable legacy. “We will remember his prominent role in rebuilding the Somali state.”

Born in Afgooye, Lower Shabelle Region in 1945, Professor Jawari's journey has been marked by an unwavering dedication to his country. He graduated from the Somali National University where he specialized in Islamic Sharia and Comprehensive Law. Throughout his life, he played a pivotal role in shaping the legal and constitutional landscape in Somalia.

Jawari served as a minister in the military government led by the late President Mohamed Siad Barre. He was also a member of the People’s Assembly during the era of the military regime. After the fall of the Somali central government in early 1991, he moved to Norway, where he lived, and in the past decades he contributed to the process of building the Somali state. He became Chairman of the Independent Constitution Committee, then was elected Speaker of the Federal Parliament in 2012, then was elected again as Speaker of the People’s Assembly, but this time he completed his term and submitted his resignation. He was currently a member of the committee appointed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to defend Somalia’s independence and regional unity.
