The African Union delegation concludes its visit to Somalia regarding security arrangements for the post-2024 period

A nine-member delegation from the African Union Political Affairs, Peace and Security Committee concluded a four-day visit to Somalia after consulting with the Federal Government of Somalia and partners on post-Atmes security arrangements in 2024.

These consultations come in response to the African Union Peace and Security Council Statement No. 1217 and the United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 2741, which provide for the completion of the concept of operations for the new peace support operation led by the African Union.

The delegation, which was received by the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Vice-Chairman of ATMIS Seful Bam, held discussions with the Mission’s senior leadership team, officials from the Federal Government of Somalia and representatives from troop-contributing countries.

They also met with Somalia's international partners including the United Nations, European Union, United Kingdom, United States, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates who form part of the group of core security partners.

The Director of the Conflict Department of the African Union, Department of Peace and Security for Political Affairs, Dr. Alhaji Sarjo Bah, participated in the meeting virtually. Ambassador Mohamed El Amin Soueif, Special Representative of the African Union to Somalia, said that the discussions focused on the size, mandate, timelines and exit strategy for the new mission.

Ambassador Soueif noted that although Somalia has made security achievements since the first deployment of African Union forces in 2007, Al-Shabaab still poses a threat to Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa region, including the international shipping route through the Indian Ocean.

The delegation’s visit confirms the commitment of the African Union and its partners to a cooperative approach to ensuring long-term stability and security in Somalia. The discussions aim to develop a comprehensive strategy that is consistent with Somalia's national security priorities and the evolving security dynamics in the region.
