The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population announced, on Saturday, that an Egyptian medical convoy examined 1,674 Somali citizens through 7 outpatient clinics at Di Martino General Hospital in Mogadishu and performed 436 surgical operations in various specialties.

The ministry said that the team that arrived in the Somali capital on September 20 provided medical services in general surgery, digestive system, oncology, orthopedics, cardiology, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, anesthesia, and critical cases.

Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said that the Egyptian team provided training services to Somali medical personnel in various specialties. Abdel Ghaffar also pointed out that the team provided Somali citizens with services included in many Egyptian presidential medical initiatives, such as early detection of obesity, anemia, and dwarfism.

He added that all Somali children who visited outpatient clinics were examined and provided with appropriate medications and nutritional supplements. At the same time, the Egyptian team discussed potential cooperation with Somali health officials, including training Somali medical personnel in Egypt and establishing an Egyptian medical center in Somalia.

Moreover, according to the statement, the Egyptian team discussed the possibility of establishing an Egyptian pharmacy to supply medicines to the Somali market and neighboring countries and facilitate the treatment of Somali patients in Egyptian hospitals.

The statement also indicated that the medical convoy was sent to implement the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to provide all means of support to the health system in Somalia. In recent years, Egypt and Somalia have strengthened relations, signing multiple memorandums of understanding in 2022 that focused on health, higher education, media, and cultural and religious cooperation.

The Egyptian team was received upon its arrival at Adam Abdullah International Airport by the Somali Minister of Health, Maryam Mohamed, the Egyptian Ambassador to Mogadishu, Mohamed El-Baz, and the Egyptian Consul General, Karim Hisham.

Last July, Egypt launched its first direct flights between Cairo and Mogadishu to strengthen relations with the Horn of Africa region, and in August, Egypt announced the opening of a new headquarters for the Egyptian embassy in the Somali capital. Egypt also sent military aid to Somalia to support and enhance the capabilities of the Somali army, according to Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallaf.
