The Permanent Representative of Somalia to the United Nations, Ambassador Abubakar Osman, welcomed US support for granting two permanent seats to Africa on the UN Security Council.

Ambassador Othman described this step as “very positive,” noting its importance in addressing historical gaps in the global governance system. This announcement came as Somalia celebrated its recent election to non-permanent membership in the Security Council, which will begin in 2025.

Somalia's election, which took place on June 6, 2024, is an important achievement for the state, and reflects its readiness to contribute effectively to issues of international peace and security during its term.
